Paintings of East

A Dreamy, Stunning, Complicated History

Visions from distant lands, a world of glittering jewels, burning sun, lavish palaces, and languid harems.

This is the fantasy of Orientalist art, based only loosely on the actual cultures of the Middle East. The paintings captivated Europeans with their breathtaking technique and enigmatic subject matter, and they continue to enthrall audiences today.

Now, you can take a private tour through the two most beloved art museums in Europe—the Louvre and the Orsay—to see these alluring artworks in person.

The Paris Orientalism Art Tour

This private tour will take you on a magical journey through the Louvre and the Orsay to see some of the most iconic works of Orientalism.

You’ll traverse three centuries of art and history, beginning in the 17th century. It is at this time that Europe first discovered the enchanting tales of One Thousand and One Nights. This led to Turqueries, whimsical depictions of Turkish palaces and Oriental princesses.

Then, you will discover Chateaubriand’s passionate writings on Palestine, which deeply influenced the artists of his time.

Next, you’ll relive Bonaparte’s 1798 expedition to Egypt and Syria, immortalized by Antoine-Jean Gros in the famous painting Bonaparte Visiting the Plague Victims of Jaffa.

Finally, you’ll follow the footsteps of the 19th-century artist-travelers who ventured into the Orient after the conquest of Algeria in 1830. These include the likes of Delacroix, Chassériau, Fromentin, and many others.

Fascinated by Egypt, Palestine, Lebanon, or Constantinople, these painters sought to rediscover the cultural roots of the West, the mythical biblical lands, or an imaginary, sensual, idealized Orient. Armed with sketchbooks and bringing back daggers, jewelry, and musical instruments, they recreated in Paris an Orient filled with fantasy and exotic dreams.

What Is Orientalism?

In the 19th century, France came alive with a desire to understand the cultures of the Middle East.

Much of this fascination obsessed over the beauty of these lands, as well as the mysterious ways of these foreign cultures. Many artists began to make the pilgrimage to Syria, Turkey, and beyond, coming back with paintings that delighted and scandalized. Because these countries lay to the East of Europe, it came to be known as the Orient (which means East in Middle French).

In particular, artists trained in the exacting style and highly realistic techniques of the Académie des Beaux-Arts were drawn to this subject matter. These so-called academists produced many paintings depicting the things they saw in the East. And they did so with a level of realism that no painters had yet achieved. They paired that with a deep sense of drama and composition, leading to true masterpieces.

Love and Drama

Audiences loved the drama of the paintings and the way they transport us to faraway lands. But as the years went on, new ways of interpreting the movement have complicated its legacy.
